We believe that we cannot adequately serve the needs of a culturally and linguistically
diverse patient population without providing excellent training in community medicine.
The residency has made a long-term commitment to the teen parent program in Sonoma
County. Residents from each year work with the teen parents in educational presentations,
home visits, and follow-up care. The curriculum allots time for each resident to participate in
an ongoing residency community outreach project, known as a leadership project.

Previous leadership projects designed and implemented by residents include: a diabetes
“bridge” clinic, comprehensive primary care for the homeless, community health outreach
worker training, a reading and literacy program, in-home safety assessments, a Spanish
radio talk show, and Latino and Vietnamese health fairs. All residents also participate in
a leadership in medicine rotation in which they work with various agencies in Sonoma
County. Many of our residents take advantage of elective opportunities to travel to
Vietnam, Kenya, Guatemala, Cuba, Mexico, and many other countries for rotations in
primary care, public health, Spanish language immersion, and obstetrics.
