The Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency is committed to train residents who are
dedicated to work with the underserved of Sonoma County, as well as inner city and rural
populations. We believe patients have the right to receive care in their own language
whenever possible and that bicultural physicians are important role models in communities
traditionally underrepresented in medicine.
Although bilingual/bicultural residents are highly valued by our patient population,
monolingual residents thrive as well. In our clinic setting, monolingual residents have the
opportunity to enhance their foreign language skills through the support of our bilingual/
bicultural staff, language courses, and elective opportunities.
PATIENT POPULATION
Twenty five percent of the family medicine patients are monolingual Spanish speakers, many
of whom are agricultural workers in Sonoma County. Individual practices vary markedly,
some of our bilingual resident physicians see as many as 80% monolingual Spanish speakers
in their clinics. We also serve the Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian, Lua, Eritrean, and Ethiopian
communities. Languages represented by our resident and faculty physicians include
Spanish, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Swedish, Indonesian, Portuguese,
Vietnamese, Korean, Hebrew, and Serbo-Croatian.
FACULTY DIVERSITY
The Latino community is well represented among our faculty and community attendings.
New residents will find committed physicians eager to serve as mentors. Please feel free to
contact the following faculty members if you have any questions; Enrique Gonzalez, M.D.
or Carlos Garcia, M.D.
